Challenges and Opportunities

An informative and interesting conference which WCVYS ran on Wednesday 3 March. Three speakers spoke about current issues for those who work with children and young people.

Nicky McDonald introduced the ‘One Children’s Workforce’ and a Common Induction. She used the conference as an opportunity to consult the sector about what we consider to be the main knowledge and skills needed by workers.

Jonathan Picken, from Worcestershire Safeguarding Children Board, spoke about Serious Case Reviews, which take place when a child or young person dies in unexpected circumstances. All agencies and groups who knew the child or young person have to review their work. This is not to ‘blame’ anyone but to identify if there is any learning from what happened.

Bridget Clark gave us an overview and update on the new Vetting and Baring scheme which is run by the Independent Safeguarding Authority. From November everyone who takes up a new position working with children or young people, whether the position paid or voluntary, will have to register. This will be done at the same time as they get a CRB and, like a CRB Disclosure there is no charge from CRB for volunteers. In many cases though some administration costs may be made by the umbrella body. Those who are already involved with groups and organisations have untill November 2015 to become registered.

A conference report including the inputs from Jonathan and Bridget can be found below.
